Mission Statement: General knowledge proficiency is a vital personal and societal asset.  Only broadly knowledgeable citizens can make informed decisions on complex issues, and form their views in appropriate contexts. The purpose of GKCB is to enhance the status of general knowledge proficiency in a culture that often stigmatizes well-informed people as “know-it-alls” or “nerds”.  Achieving a personal “critical mass” of general knowledge is not quite the same thing as academic learning or achievement.  For one thing, general knowledge has no defined boundaries and includes many information fields, like popular culture and news events, that are rarely treated academically.  Also, gaining and maintaining a sufficient grasp of general knowledge requires continuing effort and commitment.  New facts emerge every day that a well-informed person should be aware of.

Certification and Competition: The purpose of GKCB.org is to offer highly crafted, entertaining and provocative quizzes that allow participants to have the adequacy of their general knowledge evaluated and certified. The quizzes at this website are also designed to be used as vehicles for informal competitions among friends and work colleagues.  We hope this will stimulate interest in the idea of defining and achieving a sufficient grasp of factual information about our expanding world.

Registration and Privileges: Besides being given access to the quiz and evaluation of their performance, registrants at this site will be allowed to sponsor invitations to the quiz for friends and colleagues who can participate, compete with one another, and be evaluated for free.  Registrants who agree to conditions described at the registration page will be charged $6, to be billed through Paypal after they have completed the quiz.
